Vanilla is an orchid native to Mexico. Its fruits, commonly called pods produce the spice known as vanilla.
For more than two centuries, in the seventeenth century and eighteenth century, Mexico retains a monopoly on vanilla. King Louis XIV, having suffered the charm, decides to introduce it seriously groped Island Bourbon (now Réunion), but several attempts failed to fruition. In 1841, a young slave of Bourbon twelve years old he developed the practical procedure still used for artificial pollination of vanilla. Growers of Réunion in 1880 introduced the cultivation of vanilla in Madagascar. The production increases rapidly, so that the Madagascar still retains its role as the world's leading exporter.
